Background: A&M Films was the movie production division of A&M Records, the co
mpany founded by musician Herbert Alpert and recording executive Jerry Moss. A&M first flirted with filmmaking by forming A&M Productions in 1968, which only lasted a year. A&M Films was launched in July 1981 and headed by the late Gil Friesen, general manager of A&M Records. In 1989, PolyGram Filmed Entertainment purchased A&M Records and
continued producing films until 1996. In 1998, PolyGram was acquired by Seagram and Sons and A&M Records was merged with the Universal Music Group and now operates under the Interscope-Geffen-A&M label.
